New Dentures
Dentures are removable teeth (also known as ‘false teeth’). Not everyone realises that they can be used to replace single teeth as well as many teeth.
Dentures can be made of Acrylic or Metal
This can take as little 48 hours in case of an emergency and we never let you leave without teeth!
Standard Dentures
Advantages
- Dentures can be made in as little as 48 hours in case of an emergency
- Dentures can cost as little as £200 (single tooth temporary denture)
Disadvantages
- Dentures often move around, causing soreness, or embarrassment
- This makes eating and socialising more difficult
- Food often gets stuck under them
- When covering the palette it can reduce the enjoyment of food
- They need to be taken out and left in a glass by the bed at night!

Acrylic dentures
Acrylic Denture Advantages
- are the most economical way to replace missing teeth and are very easy to add to. Eg if you have one or several gaps and think that the remaining teeth may also be lost in time then an acrylic denture is one way to have the flexibility of adding teeth without breaking the bank
- acrylic dentures can look very natural.
- can be used for replacing 1, few or all of your teeth
- quick – sometimes can be done in a single week (temporary dentures only)
Acrylic Denture Disadvantages
- patients who have acrylic dentures often complain that they get food stuck under them so they need to be cleaned after every meal.
- acrylic dentures tend to move around during eating and do not stay firmly in place. Some patients use denture glue to stick them in. This fills the mouth with gooey stuff…
- bulky, often affect speech
- patients report that they don’t taste their food as well.
- upper denture usually covers some or all of the palate
- full lower denture (with all lower teeth) is impossible to eat with and will move in and out of view during speech!
- having a full upper or lower denture (or both together) will seriously restrict you diet – to soft stuff!
Metal dentures
Metal Denture Advantages
- much slimmer than acrylic ones
- stay put better than acrylic ones (more secure)
- easier than acrylic teeth for eating with as they move less
Metal Denture Disadvantages
- more expensive to produce
- often a metal clip or clasp will show at the side of your smile
- food gets stuck under them/around them (but not as badly as under acrylic dentures)
- harder to add teeth to later
- require some solid existing teeth to attach to
- not possible if there are no existing teeth to attach to
- take longer to complete than acrylic dentures – usually 6 weeks or so
